TU Delft - Customer Case Study

TU Delft, a university, sought to more accurately assess the reliability of Dutch dikes against increasing climate challenges. Their challenge was to move beyond traditional 2D analysis to calculate the probability of dike failure with greater precision. They engaged SURF to access the additional computing power required for this complex research via its Grid-platform service.

SURF provided the high-performance computing infrastructure, offering 2.5 million core hours to power a new 3D random finite element method (RFEM) model. This SURF solution enabled researchers to run the immense number of calculations needed, resulting in a much more accurate prediction of dike failure risk. This allows for the construction and maintenance of dikes with smaller safety margins and greater efficiency.
