Case Study: University of Twente advances big data research with SURF and the Netherlands eScience Centre

A SURF Case Study

Ten years of collaboration on research software

The University of Twente, a research institution, needed expertise and infrastructure to develop specific research software for processing massive geospatial data to study continental-scale phenological events. They engaged with SURF and the Netherlands eScience Center to overcome challenges with slow models and a lack of big data capabilities.

SURF collaborated by providing the computational infrastructure and, alongside the eScience Center, developed ready-to-use tools for Earth observation data. This solution sped up the research models and lowered the barrier of entry for the geospatial research community. The partnership was a success, establishing the University of Twente as a pioneer in big data analysis and leading to the creation of its own big data center.
