Super-precise positioning via optical network

The customer, TU Delft, faced the challenge of GPS being unreliable for critical applications like self-driving cars in urban areas, where signal reflections cause inaccurate positioning. To solve this, they partnered with the vendor SURF.

SURF extended its optical network to distribute the highly precise time signal from an atomic clock to radio transmitters. This enabled the SuperGPS system to locate vehicles to within 1-2 decimetres, a critical improvement for road safety, which was successfully demonstrated in a practical test.
