Safer cities with smart bikes, edge computing and public clouds

The Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) faced the challenge of improving urban safety by monitoring public infrastructure like streetlights and signs. They partnered with SURF to develop the digital infrastructure required to operate a fleet of sensor-equipped "smart bikes" that could autonomously analyze city streets using public cloud services.

SURF implemented a hybrid-cloud solution leveraging AWS IoT Greengrass for intelligent device management and Amazon SageMaker for the machine learning lifecycle. This infrastructure enabled HvA to centrally manage the bikes, remotely deploy software, and continuously improve the object-detection models that identify urban problems, creating a fully automated system for maintaining a safer city environment.
