No more limits for IoT at UvA and HvA thanks to iotroam

The University of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (UvA/HvA) faced the challenge of a growing number of IoT devices, such as fitness machines and medical equipment, that could not securely connect to their existing eduroam Wi-Fi network. This led to the use of insecure, custom solutions. To address this, they worked with SURF to pilot its iotroam service.

SURF's iotroam provided a secure, vendor-neutral platform for the UvA/HvA to register and manage all their IoT devices on a dedicated, isolated network. The solution immediately solved the acute problem, allowing hundreds of devices like AEDs and air quality sensors to connect securely. This centralized management gave the institution full control, eliminating the need for unauthorized access points and streamlining incident response.
