A SURF Case Study
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) was challenged by the massive influx of DNA sequencing data during the COVID-19 pandemic, which overwhelmed its existing storage and data management infrastructure. The organization needed a solution to scale its capacity quickly to manage and securely share these very large datasets.
To solve this, SURF provided its Storage scale-out service, a module that was integrated relatively easily with RIVM's own iRODS data management environment. This solution enabled the automatic archiving of raw data to SURF's Data Archive based on customizable policies. The collaboration was highly successful, with SURF's pragmatic support ensuring rapid implementation and reliable performance, allowing RIVM to efficiently handle a week's worth of data that previously took a full year to process.
