How to purify industrial wastewater by means of bacteria

A researcher from TU Delft faced the challenge of analyzing enormous amounts of DNA data from micro-organisms for a project on industrial wastewater purification. The volume of data was far too large to be processed by an ordinary computer in a practical timeframe. To overcome this, the researcher turned to SURF and utilized its national supercomputer service.

By using SURF's national supercomputer, the research team was able to process one terabyte of data in 400 hours, a task that would have taken months on a regular computer. This provided essential insights into which micro-organisms best purify wastewater under specific conditions. The solution from SURF was deemed essential for the research to proceed and will form the basis for the project's next phase.
