A SURF Case Study
KNMI, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, which hosts the ORFEUS European data centre for seismology, needed to improve the management and long-term availability of its extensive seismic data archive. The challenge was to securely replicate this large dataset and integrate it within a European system of interconnected data archives. To address this, KNMI/ORFEUS collaborated with SURF.
SURF implemented its B2SAFE service to replicate the entire 30TB ORFEUS archive to SURF's database. The solution involved more than just a copy; SURF also provided the dataset with Persistent Identifiers to ensure its long-term accessibility. The successful replication has made the research data easier to manage and share within European multidisciplinary research infrastructures. Furthermore, having the data stored at SURF opens possibilities for leveraging their computing facilities to further unlock and analyze the data for the user community.
