Frocole the app for feedback and reflection in collaborative learning

The Open University faced a challenge in ensuring successful collaborative learning among students, as issues like poor group dynamics and "free riders" often went unaddressed, hindering the learning process and study success. To tackle this, they partnered with SURF to develop a solution, the Frocole app, through SURF's Open and Online Education Incentive Scheme.

SURF's solution was the platform-independent Frocole app, which enables students to give and receive peer feedback on collaboration criteria and provides visual analytics and reflection prompts. This implementation has resulted in enthusiastic student reception, with pilots indicating it is an effective tool for improving group cooperation. The Open University reports that the app helps make group issues visible and discussable early on, ultimately working to increase study success, and development continues on expanded features for future versions.
