ArtEZ students make live music together from three locations

The art school ArtEZ Arnhem, with conservatoire locations across three cities, faced a challenge enabling its music students to perform and collaborate live together without the latency issues of standard video conferencing tools. They partnered with SURF to leverage its high-speed research network to create a solution for real-time, remote ensemble playing.

SURF provided the low-latency, high-bandwidth fiber-optic network that connects ArtEZ's audio studios. This solution, termed "The 4th Location," uses professional broadcast equipment to allow musicians in Arnhem, Enschede, and Zwolle to play in sync with a delay of less than 5 milliseconds. The result is that students can now form complete virtual orchestras across separate cities, enriching their educational experience and enabling successful remote graduations and performances.
