Tesco deploys 5 zero-emission cooling units with Sunswap

Tesco, the UK's largest grocer, faced the challenge of meeting its ambitious sustainability goals, which included achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. A significant barrier was the diesel-powered transport refrigeration units in its fleet, which needed a zero-emission alternative capable of handling complex, multi-temperature deliveries without compromising operational performance. They turned to vendor Sunswap and its Endurance transport refrigeration units for a solution.

Sunswap implemented its purpose-built, all-electric Endurance units, which are powered by integrated solar panels and batteries. Following a successful trial, five units were deployed, enabling Tesco to transport frozen, chilled, and ambient goods in a single, zero-emission journey. This deployment directly contributes to Tesco's carbon neutrality target and validates electric transport refrigeration as an operationally viable technology for the entire retail industry.
