A Sungrow Case Study
Engie required a solution for Latin America's first and largest DC-coupled solar-plus-storage project in Chile's Atacama Desert. The challenges were integrating a massive 638 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) with an existing solar plant and ensuring reliable operation in an environment with extreme temperature swings. Vendor Sungrow provided its PowerTitan energy storage system to address these complex needs.
Sungrow's solution utilized a prefabricated, modular design with smart liquid-cooling technology housed in a single container, which simplified integration and ensured stable operation in the harsh desert climate. The resulting BESS Coya facility stabilizes power for nearly 200,000 households, is expected to cut diesel usage by 260,000 tons annually, and serves as a major benchmark for large-scale renewable energy projects, significantly advancing Chile's clean energy goals.
