One of Australia’s Leading Telecom Providers Keeps Tabs on Data Centre Energy Usage and Power Capacity

Commander, one of Australia’s leading telecommunications carriers and colocation providers, faced a lack of accurate, real-time visibility into customer-level energy usage and overall data centre power capacity—hindering billing, capacity planning and compliance with emerging NABERS energy‑rating requirements. To solve this, Commander implemented Sunbird DCIM’s Power IQ® energy management software together with Raritan Branch Circuit Monitors to capture per-circuit data and surface it on a centralized dashboard.

Sunbird DCIM’s Power IQ ingested readings from BCM units monitoring 450 circuits (32 BCMs across seven switchboards) to provide web-based, billing‑grade (+/-1%) kWh, amps, voltage and power metrics, alerts, and PUE trending. The two‑week, non‑disruptive deployment gave Commander real-time per-rack/customer visibility, the ability to bill customers accurately each month, improved capacity planning, support for NABERS reporting, and a low‑cost path to ongoing energy-efficiency gains.
