KDDI Enables Complete Remote Monitoring of Edge Data Centers with Sunbird DCIM

KDDI Corporation, a Japanese telecommunications operator, ran a proof-of-concept to deploy an immersion-cooled edge data center in a 12-foot container housing 50 kVA of servers and an immersion cooling tank, targeting a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.1 or less. To remotely monitor and manage this edge deployment, KDDI engaged Sunbird DCIM, leveraging Sunbird’s PowerIQ and dcTrack DCIM software to collect power and environmental telemetry.

Sunbird DCIM aggregated one‑minute power readings from Raritan intelligent PDUs and BCM, environmental data from Raritan SRC and the BAS‑7050RT gateway, and camera and VMware telemetry, displaying PUE, power/temperature trends and asset/cabling information on customizable dashboards. The solution gave KDDI complete remote visibility and asset management, automated PUE calculation and trend analysis, and helped KDDI and partner DC ASIA complete a successful proof‑of‑concept in December 2021 that demonstrated DCIM’s effectiveness in edge environments.
