Cisco Systems - Customer Case Study

Cisco Systems faced a major energy challenge: its global labs (more than 1,600 sites, ~2.3M sq ft) consumed about 60% of the company’s power (>900 MWh) and drove an annual electricity bill of over $80M. To cut costs and greenhouse gas emissions across these dynamic, distributed IT environments, Cisco deployed a comprehensive energy-management program and integrated monitoring — including smart PDUs and automated controls — supported by Sunbird DCIM’s data-center infrastructure management platform.

Using Sunbird DCIM for centralized inventory, monitoring and remote control, Cisco was able to roll out ~11,000 smart PDUs, implement automated shutdown scripts and target airflow and cooling upgrades while driving employee engagement. The program is on track to save at least $9M annually in electricity costs (about $8.6M attributed to smart PDUs), plus additional savings such as $250K from EDVT shutdown scripts and $1.1M from coordinated holiday shutdowns.
