AOL data centers reduce energy consumption and find unused capacity among the racks with intelligent power management solutions

AOL, a global web services company, wanted detailed, outlet‑level visibility into power use across its data centers to reduce utility costs, lower its carbon footprint, and uncover unused rack capacity. To meet that challenge AOL deployed Sunbird DCIM’s Power IQ energy management software alongside Raritan Dominion PX intelligent rack PDUs to collect per‑outlet power, temperature and humidity data.

Sunbird DCIM’s Power IQ centralized telemetry, thermal analytics and alerting in a single dashboard, enabling AOL to identify idle servers, overcooled racks, and underused capacity and to perform centralized PDU management and firmware updates. The deployment showed many devices drawing roughly 50% of nameplate capacity, allowed safe increases in ambient temperature to cut cooling energy, and delivered measurable reductions in energy use and carbon footprint while freeing rack capacity.
