UK Parliament achieves WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility with Studio 24

Studio 24 worked with the UK Parliament's Parliamentary Digital Service to address significant accessibility and user experience challenges across its three research websites. An urgent need to comply with new public sector web accessibility laws by a September 2020 deadline was compounded by an outdated WordPress theme that could not be made accessible. Additional project goals were to update the design to align with the Parliament Digital Design System, improve the site's information architecture, and make the sites easier to maintain.

The solution implemented by Studio 24 was a complete front-end rebuild using a new, accessible WordPress theme. They delivered the project on time for the legal deadline, created a pattern library for streamlined design, and established a simplified, flat navigation structure. The results were highly successful: the websites now meet and often exceed the required accessibility scores, downloads of research briefings have significantly increased, and power users report finding information much more quickly. Furthermore, rebuilding the sites as a multi-site installation reduced long-term maintenance costs for the UK Parliament.
