Vocera Helps Ranken Jordan Let “kids be kids” as Integral Part of Innovative Care-Beyond-the-Bedside Model

Ranken Jordan is a 34‑bed pediatric bridge hospital near St. Louis that specializes in rehabilitation and subacute care for medically complex children and follows a “care beyond the bedside” philosophy that encourages patients to move freely around a 60,000 sq ft facility and 12‑acre campus. The hospital needed a reliable, hands‑free communication alternative to disruptive overhead paging so staff could locate one another quickly, maintain patient safety while children were mobile, and avoid time wasted searching for people and supplies.

Ranken Jordan implemented Vocera’s hands‑free wireless badge system in 2009 so staff and volunteers can communicate continuously across the building and grounds; emergency broadcasts are triggered by double‑clicking a badge to summon the response team with location and issue details. The system extended effective inpatient space, supported the mobile care model, improved efficiency and workflow, boosted staff satisfaction (top 10% nationally) and patient/parent satisfaction (97%), and delivered clear operational ROI.
