A Stryker Case Study
University of Maryland Children’s Hospital (UMCH) moved its Level IV NICU into a new 37,000 sq ft, all-private-room unit focused on family-centered care, but the separation from Labor & Delivery and the elimination of overhead paging left the team without a reliable alerting and communication system. UMCH also needed to improve compliance with Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) documentation and provide quiet, dependable alarm notifications and trackable response workflows across dispersed caregivers.
UMCH deployed Vocera Engage Mobile on Zebra phones (plus desktop-to-mobile messaging) to broadcast emergency alerts, enable closed‑loop communication, and capture acknowledgements and reports. The system eliminated 60–80 overhead emergency pages per month, improved key NRP documentation (for example, meconium documentation rose from 38% to 97%, urgency from 65% to 99%, and requester identification to 100%), enhanced alarm responsiveness and team collaboration, and enabled ongoing workflow refinements and future Epic and AirStrip integrations.
