A Stryker Case Study
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) is a busy public teaching hospital and Level One Trauma Center in San Jose, CA, handling tens of thousands of admissions and hundreds of thousands of outpatient and emergency visits each year. After the Affordable Care Act increased demand and the hospital’s average daily census rose to about 380 beds, long delays in moving patients from the ED to inpatient rooms highlighted inefficiencies—especially with Environmental Services (EVS) staff who had to log into Epic at workstations to update room-cleaning status, slowing bed turnaround and admission flow.
SCVMC implemented a two-way integration between the Vocera Communication System and Epic so EVS staff could receive cleaning requests and update room status in real time via Vocera badges, eliminating multi-step computer logins. The streamlined workflow cut bed turnaround times by more than 50%, reduced patient wait times and improved admissions throughput, boosted staff morale, and generated interest in expanding the solution to other departments.
