NHS Foundation Trust Implementing technology to improve communication, patient flow and care

Peterborough City Hospital, part of the Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, opened in 2010 as a 612‑bed centralised facility combining three smaller sites. The much larger footprint and new phone numbers created significant communication challenges for staff—bleeps and phone calls were slow and inefficient, threatening timely patient flow from the ED to theatres and wards.

The trust deployed 800 wearable Vocera devices and integrated the system with existing messaging and alert systems to enable instant one‑to‑one and broadcast voice communication. The solution reduced staff “legwork,” reclaimed clinical time (staff reported up to an hour a day), increased theatre utilization by an estimated 10–15%, and sped patient admissions and coordination across teams, delivering immediate improvements in communication, patient flow and care.
