Nation’s Busiest Veterinary Teaching Hospital Improves Staff Communication, Safety, and Mobility

The University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), the nation’s busiest veterinary teaching hospital treating more than 35,000 companion and 4,000 large animal cases annually across 16 specialty areas, faced serious staff-communication challenges. Steel and concrete infrastructure, one-way pagers and unreliable push-to-talk phones left clinicians hard to reach—creating delays in triage and safety risks for staff working with large animals and in isolated areas.

VMC implemented Vocera’s Wi‑Fi wearable devices and mobile app—adding secure texting, an active staff directory, group and call-by-name features and hands‑free voice calling—and doubled device coverage within six months. The solution delivered reliable, fast communication, improved staff safety and satisfaction, streamlined triage, and enabled secure photo-sharing and message delivery tracking for better collaboration and mobility.
