Focus on Patient-Centered Care and Communication Improves Staff Efficiency, Patient Experience with Vocera Communications System

Mountain States Health Alliance built Franklin Woods Community Hospital to replace two outdated facilities and address lengthy admitting times, communication delays and other barriers to patient-centered care. To support faster, safer and more patient-focused care, leadership selected the Vocera Communications System—small wearable badges and intelligent calling software—to improve staff communication across departments.

After thorough piloting and training, Vocera was broadly deployed and integrated with the nurse-call system. Average internal call time fell from 7 minutes 11 seconds to 40 seconds (a >90% reduction), more than 1.2 million calls have been handled since opening, voice recognition reached 84.9%, staff survey results showed high satisfaction (99 of 136 satisfied; 75% agreed Vocera makes their job easier), response times improved, and ambient noise and overhead paging were significantly reduced.
