Community Hospital Anticipates Patient Needs, Improves Satisfaction across Key HCAHPS Domains

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is a 125‑bed not‑for‑profit community hospital in Seguin, Texas, serving an eight‑county area and nearly 5,000 annual admissions. GRMC’s paper‑based patient and staff rounding process made it hard to track requests, spot unit trends, or rapidly act on problems—limiting responsiveness, increasing staff workload, and constraining improvements in patient experience and HCAHPS scores.

GRMC implemented Vocera Rounds, a configurable SaaS rounding platform aligned to the “GRMC way,” to capture real‑time patient and staff feedback for huddle boards and management review. Proactive, standardized rounding reduced nurse calls, improved staff engagement, and produced measurable gains across HCAHPS domains after deployment in 2015 — for example, an 11.8% overall improvement in pain management and higher “rate hospital 9–10” scores, plus national percentile jumps (communication with nurses 70→91, pain management 89→95).
