Case Study: Eskimo Steel achieves efficient crane retrofit delivery with STRUMIS

A STRUMIS Case Study

Preview of the Eskimo Steel Case Study

Eskimo Steel - Customer Case Study

Eskimo Steel, a full-service structural steel fabricator and erector, was tasked with retrofitting the Shell Canada Energy Building into a fabrication facility. The project posed major challenges around maximizing crane travel, minimizing relocation of existing structures and MEP equipment, and meeting a tight design-to-commissioning schedule. Eskimo Steel used STRUMIS software, along with 3D detailing and StruWalker/BIMReview, to support the project.

STRUMIS helped Eskimo Steel optimize procurement, production, and scheduling while 3D modeling improved design accuracy and site efficiency. The team developed three-dimensional tower columns recessed between existing building columns to eliminate the need for horizontal trusses and maximize overhead crane span and lateral hook travel. The project’s success was recognized with a category win at the CISC Alberta Awards 2011, and Eskimo Steel credited STRUMIS as integral to delivering the project efficiently from start to finish.
