Case Study: Tomago Aluminium saves millions and slashes backup time with Stromasys CHARON-AXP

A Stromasys Case Study

Preview of the Tomago Aluminium Case Study

Tomago Saves Millions Using CHARON™-AXP, Without Sacrificing Functionality or Security

Tomago Aluminium, one of Australasia’s largest smelters, was running a critical production system on an aging DEC AlphaServer (OpenVMS). The IT team needed to modernize hardware without rewriting mission‑critical applications or risking downtime—requiring an exact replication of the legacy AXP environment to maintain plant productivity.

Fujitsu and partner UBS Solutions implemented Stromasys CHARON‑AXP, validating the emulator in a development environment before a live cutover. The migration took under four hours, delivered identical OpenVMS functionality, cut nightly backup from 5 hours to 30 minutes, reduced rack space, power use and CO2 emissions, and avoided multi‑million‑dollar application rewrites while providing at least a decade of extendable system life.
