Racine Water regains access to records thanks to Charon-HPA

Racine Water & Wastewater Utilities, which serves about 100,000 customers in Racine, Wisconsin, relied on an HP 3000 A-400 with MPE/iX since the 1980s for billing. After a 2008 platform migration carried over only four years of history, more than 25 years of billing records remained on the HP 3000 and Wisconsin law required continued access to that archived data.

In 2014 Ken Scolaro engaged Mike York of Assertive Systems, who selected Stromasys CHARON‑HPA/A408 to virtualize the HP 3000. Stromasys recovered data from a legacy DDS1 tape (using a procured drive and Oracle Box to build a VM), configured MPE/iX 7.5 on the virtual HP 3000, and delivered the VM to Racine. The result: original hardware was replaced by a PC running CHARON, staff required no retraining, billing history access was restored, and the applications have run flawlessly.
