Waitrose & Partners, a leading UK supermarket, needed to rapidly scale its Waitrose Rapid two‑hour grocery delivery service after lockdown drove a surge in online orders. The challenge was to expand delivery capacity and protect vulnerable customers while maintaining a smooth, high‑conversion checkout experience and keeping fraud low.
Waitrose built the checkout with Stripe Elements for an adaptive, mobile‑friendly flow and added Stripe Radar for ML‑driven fraud detection. This allowed them to confidently scale payments, treble delivery slots in April (with 40% reserved for elderly and vulnerable customers) and ultimately expand Rapid across dozens of neighbourhoods, while preparing to add digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
