A Stripe Case Study
Postmates, an on-demand delivery platform operating in 4,200 US cities with more than 600,000 couriers and the largest U.S. merchant network, was facing rapidly rising card network fees—tens of millions annually under a flat‑rate pricing model. To protect margins it sought greater transparency and a move to a cost‑plus (interchange‑plus) approach to identify and reduce transaction costs.
Stripe’s Payment Performance team analyzed Postmates’ transaction data and payment flows and recommended targeted changes across card types and routing, international processing, refunds, penalty downgrades, and average order value/tipping (plus ongoing operational support). Those recommendations identified $3.3M in savings and established a continuous optimization program backed by dedicated account and technical managers, workshops, and weekly syncs.
