Hex meets users’ rising compute demand with usage-based billing powered by Stripe

Hex, the San Francisco-based data platform, saw rapid growth as customers increasingly wanted more CPUs, GPUs, and memory for advanced ML and data science workflows. To meet this demand, Hex needed a way to charge for compute based on actual usage without building a complex billing system or creating a fragmented customer experience, and it turned to Stripe Billing and usage-based billing.

With Stripe, Hex launched usage-based billing through the Meters API, added billing thresholds for spend visibility, and integrated Stripe Tax with help from Stripe professional services. Stripe helped Hex roll out the new model in about eight weeks, and the company has already recorded more than 500 million usage events; the Stripe Tax implementation took just over a month and added $24k in incremental revenue, with near-zero support burden for customers.
