From Kafka to Pulsar Creating A Comprehensive Middleware Platform to Power HUAWEI Mobile Services

Huawei Device, part of Huawei, needed a more flexible messaging and streaming platform for HUAWEI Mobile Services to support many service scenarios, including delay queues, dead-letter queues, massive partitions, cloud-native scaling, and disaster recovery. After struggling with Kafka’s operational complexity, manual rebalancing, and resource inefficiency, the company worked with StreamNative to evaluate a better fit for its middleware needs.

StreamNative helped Huawei Device build a unified middle platform based on Apache Pulsar, including a unified SDK, dynamic topic discovery, consolidated authentication and authorization, and Kafka compatibility via Kafka-on-Pulsar. The new architecture improved scaling and load balancing, enabled more efficient disaster recovery across AZs, and raised CPU utilization from 20% to 40% while reducing load imbalance to under 10% and boosting overall resource utilization by about 30%.
