Apache Pulsar in Practice vivo's Road to a Cloud-native Messaging and Streaming Experience

Vivo, a telecommunications company with more than 10,000 employees, needed a more scalable and reliable messaging platform for its real-time computing, data integration, and message queueing services. Its existing Apache Kafka clusters were struggling with performance degradation, low resource utilization, difficult scaling, large metadata overhead, and hardware failures as traffic grew across many business scenarios. StreamNative’s Apache Pulsar solution was evaluated as an alternative to address these issues.

With StreamNative’s Apache Pulsar, vivo adopted a cloud-native, two-layer architecture that separated compute from storage, improving scalability, fault tolerance, and load balancing. The team also built custom bundle, ledger, retention, deletion, and monitoring practices on top of Pulsar, and the platform now handles over 100 billion messages per day. StreamNative’s approach helped vivo distribute traffic more evenly, reduce manual migration work, improve observability, and set up a path toward Kafka-on-Pulsar migration and Kubernetes deployment.
