How a Student Built an Award-Winning App with Stream

The Barter App, built by university student Fathul Fahmy, is a mobile-first service exchange platform where users can barter services directly or with optional monetary compensation. Facing a four-month deadline to deliver 18 modules, the biggest challenge was adding real-time messaging without spending valuable time building and scaling chat infrastructure from scratch. To solve this, the team used Stream Chat alongside a Laravel backend and React Native frontend.

Stream provided the chat APIs and SDKs needed to integrate real-time messaging quickly, including support for React Native and PHP. With Stream, Fathul shipped a polished chat experience in less than one week and completed the full app in four months, helping The Barter App win his university’s Outstanding Final Year Project Award.
