Case Study: McCarran International Airport achieves continuous, zero-downtime security and baggage handling with Stratus Technologies everRun software

A Stratus Technologies Case Study

Preview of the McCarran International Airport Case Study

A rapidly growing Las Vegas airport relies on Stratus everRun software to prevent security and baggage handling system downtime

McCarran International Airport, the primary commercial airport serving the Las Vegas Valley and handling more than 42.9 million passengers annually, faced frequent unplanned outages of its Pegasys 2000 physical security system and Vanderlande baggage handling system. These failures forced costly manual monitoring, risked TSA fines and operational shutdowns, increased misrouted and delayed luggage, and threatened passenger safety and service levels.

Working with vendor Johnson Controls, McCarran deployed Stratus everRun fault‑tolerant software across paired HP DL380 servers using a SplitSite configuration with synchronous mirroring between two datacenters about one mile apart. Since deployment in 1999, the airport has recorded zero unplanned downtime for those systems, scaled seamlessly for Terminal 3, survived a 2015 datacenter flood without interruption, and avoided labor, liability and compliance costs while improving reliability, security and the passenger experience.
