Telefónica UK (O2), a leading UK communications company with over 23 million customers and 11,000+ employees, faced increasing competition, rapid data growth and a move to 4G that made profitability and efficiency critical. Its marketing, sales, service and finance reporting relied on slow, large Microsoft Access and Excel files created in disparate “cottage industry” silos, so the company decided to build a single Teradata data warehouse to provide a fast, accurate single source of truth.

After an RFP that included SAP BusinessObjects and Cognos, Telefónica UK selected MicroStrategy for its drill-down analytics, visualisations, performance at scale and Teradata partnership. The solution went live in 2010 with 300–350 users and a pyramid of KPI scorecards; it delivers faster insight, mobile access for executives, self-service “slice and dice” analysis and early warnings on issues like excessive usage, and is helping the company consolidate data silos and rationalise its reporting.
