Case Study: City of Austin, TX achieves faster insights and citywide self-service reporting with MicroStrategy

A Strategy Case Study

Preview of the City of Austin, TX Case Study

City of Austin - Customer Case Study

The City of Austin, a fast-growing community of about 800,000 and the 11th most populous U.S. city, faced slow time-to-insight despite an award-winning financial portal. A mix of home-grown ERP systems and custom applications made ad hoc reporting laborious and led to redundant user requests that shifted IT’s focus from systems management to answering repeated report queries; departments were running costly, disparate BI efforts on their own.

Austin selected MicroStrategy for its unified, organically grown architecture and Visual Insight self-service tools, standardizing data sets and definitions across the city. The platform pushed ad hoc reporting into the workforce, freed IT to work on higher-value initiatives, and fostered interdepartmental collaboration; ongoing projects—HR dashboards, permitting workflow tracking, mobile field data collection, and ESRI-based crime mapping—are already improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing citizen services.
