Canadian Institute for Health Information - Customer Case Study

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides essential information on Canada’s health systems. Faced with the need to make hospital cost data transparent and accessible across jurisdictions and patient groups, CIHI needed a way to present comparable average costs of services while clearly defining what the estimates include and exclude.

CIHI deployed the interactive Patient Cost Estimator (PCE), a live tool that presents national, jurisdictional and age-group average hospital service costs via maps, tables and supporting links. The PCE shows costs incurred by hospitals (excluding physician fees), letting users quickly estimate and compare typical service costs and improving transparency and access to actionable cost information for policymakers, providers and the public.
