A Stratasys Case Study
West Virginia University Institue of Technology was asked by the State Capitol Police to build an updated tabletop model of the West Virginia State Capitol campus to improve security planning and avoid repeated site walkthroughs. CAD professors Bill Javins and Jim King needed a faster alternative to foam core and balsa wood, and secured a grant to purchase a Dimension 3D Printer from Stratasys.
Using the Stratasys Dimension 3D Printer, WVU Tech completed a detailed 4 x 4 ft model in six months—featuring more than 200 vehicles, surrounding buildings, train tracks, and dozens of site features—and Capitol Police report significant time savings in event preparation (including for a presidential candidate visit). Stratasys’ solution also enabled WVU Tech to print nearly 50 production and prototype parts for NGK Sparkplug, cutting part turnaround from 1–3 months to same-day delivery.
