Utah Valley University (UVU) sought a way to better engage high school students and strengthen its engineering and design curriculum through hands‑on prototyping. Professor David Manning introduced a 3D Design Derby after UVU acquired a Stratasys Dimension 3D Printer (via High Country Technology Consultants) to turn student CAD designs into physical parts and integrate rapid prototyping into the classroom.

Using the Stratasys Dimension 3D Printer, UVU runs the annual 3D Design Derby where students model, print and race pinewood‑derby–style cars and even print the trophies. The Stratasys solution produced clear results: the Derby grew to nearly 200 participants—a more than 30% increase from the prior year—boosting student confidence, hands‑on design skills, and interest in engineering programs.
