University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine creates CT- and MRI-visible canine brain models with Stratasys

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine faced a challenge in veterinary neurosurgery, where a lack of patient-specific tools made it difficult to train clinicians and plan complex procedures like brain biopsies for dogs. To address this, they collaborated with Stratasys and used the Stratasys Digital Anatomy Printer to create accurate, scan-visible models.

Stratasys provided a solution by producing 3D printed "physical twin" models of a canine brain that were detectable under both CT and MRI scans without post-processing. The results showed remarkable fidelity to the original patient imaging data, enabling precise surgical planning and safe hands-on training. This first-of-its-kind application in veterinary medicine has the potential to become a standard for safer, smarter treatments.
