A Stratasys Case Study
The University of Colorado - Boulder, led by Professor Rob MacCurdy, was challenged with advancing multi-material 3D printing to create complex robots with integrated hydraulic actuation and highly realistic, patient-specific medical models. Their goal required more flexible and precise control over the additive manufacturing process than standard tools could provide. To achieve this, they utilized Stratasys PolyJet printers and sought out advanced software capabilities.
Stratasys provided a solution through its Research package, which offered Professor MacCurdy's team the advanced software tools and voxel-level control needed for their innovative multi-material designs. This enabled the successful 3D printing of robots with integrated fluid channels that could be activated directly out of the printer, a process not possible with post-processing. The results included improved pre-surgical planning models for surgeons and significant progress in creating functional, 3D-printed robotics with complex material properties.
