The University of Applied Sciences Ravensburg-Weingarten faced a challenge in creating a first-of-its-kind self-balancing scooter, as its complex frame design was too difficult and time-intensive to produce using traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. The department of mechanical engineering turned to Stratasys additive technology to overcome these limitations and enable the rapid production of a fully-functional, customized prototype.

By utilizing Stratasys 3D printers, including the Fortus 900mc and Connex3, the university was able to produce the scooter's large frame and a rubber-like grip platform. This solution from Stratasys reduced the manufacturing phase from an estimated three weeks with traditional methods to just four days. The project significantly broadened the use of 3D printing in their curriculum, changed student mindset towards additive design, and provided graduates with expertise highly sought after by global companies.
