The University Hospital of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg, faced challenges in sustaining its use of a third-party service bureau for 3D-printed surgical models. The process was both costly and inefficient for managing iterative model revisions, hindering the hospital's ability to plan for complex surgeries. This led them to partner with vendor Stratasys to establish an in-house 3D printing lab.

The solution was the implementation of the Stratasys J5 MediJet 3D printer. This allowed the hospital's lab to produce advanced, multi-material models and sterilizable surgical guides in-house. The results included improved pre-surgical planning, patient education, and research. Surgeons have become reliant on the 3D-printed guides, stating they no longer want to perform certain surgeries without them, and the lab has now produced over a thousand 3D printed parts.
