A Stratasys Case Study
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre partnered with Stratasys to transform decades of satellite-derived water-extent data into accessible, policy-friendly 3D visualizations. Confronted with a massive volume of stacked 2D imagery and the challenge of preserving subtle color gradients and fine detail without converting rasters into traditional 3D geometry, the JRC used Stratasys’ PolyJet technology—specifically Voxel Print™ within GrabCAD Print Pro™ on the J850™ Prime—to explore new forms of scientific communication.
Stratasys’ solution mapped color gradients into volumetric voxels and printed multi-material, highly transparent models (using VeroClear, VeroUltra™ White and VeroVivid materials), enabling direct printing from image stacks and unprecedented resolution. The Stratasys-enabled workflow produced four exhibition models that visualize 40 years of Earth surface and water changes, revealed details even high-resolution satellite images missed, and delivered measurable public engagement and new possibilities for architecture education and practice.
