Streamlined Manufacturing and Increased Flexibility at Spring SRL with FDM

Spring SRL, an Italy-based concept development and prototyping house, struggled to meet growing customer demand for larger quantities and shorter turnaround using labor-intensive aluminum tooling that was costly, heavy and slow to produce. To overcome these challenges they turned to Stratasys and its FDM 3D printing technology (including ULTEM™ 9085 materials and the Fortus 900mc) to enable faster, more flexible tooling and part production.

Stratasys’ solution—10 FDM printers plus soluble ST-130 supports and high-performance thermoplastics—allowed Spring SRL to 3D print composite molds and end parts, cutting fender support lead times by 75% and halving composite tool production time versus traditional methods. Using the Fortus 900mc and advanced polycarbonate, Spring SRL produced a full-size part that was 59% lighter than the metal counterpart and made it 36% faster, while maintaining strength and high-temperature performance.
