SSL Cuts Lead Time for Customized Composite Tooling by Embracing 3D Printing

SSL, based in Palo Alto, California, is a premier designer, manufacturer and integrator of satellite systems that needed faster, cost-effective tooling for complex high-temperature composite parts. Traditional CNC-machined tooling was slow, expensive and wasteful, so SSL partnered with Stratasys and adopted Stratasys FDM technology using Fortus 3D Printers to produce customized, high-temperature lay-up tooling.

Stratasys provided Fortus 3D printed tooling capable of 350 °F (180 °C) autoclave cure cycles, delivering a tailored lay-up tool in less than 48 hours (shipping included) and cutting lead time by 50%—with many builds completed in under 24 hours. The Stratasys solution reduced cost and material waste, enabled rapid design iterations and greater customization, and let SSL respond to design changes quickly without compromising part quality or performance.
