Saint Louis University 3D prints microfluidic chips in under 30 minutes with Stratasys

The Department of Chemistry at Saint Louis University, in collaboration with researchers from Michigan State University, faced the challenge of a costly, labor-intensive, and time-consuming traditional fabrication process for creating microfluidic lab-on-chip devices. They turned to vendor Stratasys and its PolyJet Technology to explore a more efficient manufacturing method that could also improve reproducibility and customization.

Stratasys provided a solution using a PolyJet 3D printer and materials like VeroClear and Tango+. This technology enabled the team to 3D print a microfluidic chip with complex micro-channels in less than half an hour, a significant reduction from the traditional 8-hour process. The solution resulted in devices that were more durable, easily reproduced, and suitable for optical analysis, fundamentally changing their approach to manufacturing these microfluidic devices.
