A Stratasys Case Study
Rocket Composites, a manufacturer of carbon fiber parts for aerospace and automotive industries, faced a challenge when a client order required tools with a non-porous finish. Their Stratasys Fortus 450mc 3D printer, using materials like ULTEM 1010 resin, produced parts with an inherent porous nature that was unacceptable. Furthermore, the optimal material for one of the tools, ABS-CF10, was not natively compatible with their printer model.
By implementing Stratasys's OpenAM software, engineers were able to create custom 3D printing profiles that optimized parameters like flow factor and extrusion temperature, eliminating porosity. The software also allowed them to add the non-native ABS-CF10 material to their Fortus 450mc. This Stratasys solution resulted in perfect surface finishes, saved $5,700, and reduced delivery time by a full week compared to the traditional machined-metal alternative.
