A Stratasys Case Study
Rennschmiede Pforzheim, the student-led racing team from Pforzheim University, needed a non‑metallic battery case to house 72 cylindrical cells for their Formula Student electric race car, but machining or molding a one‑off part from polymer like PEEK was impractical and costly. The team turned to Stratasys and 3D printing using ULTEM™ 9085 resin to meet the electrical insulation and flame‑retardant (UL94 V0) requirements.
Stratasys produced the complex, hole‑rich battery case via 3D printing, delivering the part in about 20 hours while avoiding roughly 75% of material waste compared with milling, reducing weight and cost and enabling greater design freedom. The Stratasys solution met safety specs, cut lead time dramatically, and provided the material and manufacturing efficiency needed for a competitive race vehicle.
