Queen Elizabeth Hospital Saves Time and Cost While Improving Patient Outcomes

Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham faced lengthy, unpredictable maxillofacial surgeries where prosthetic plates and bone replacements often required multiple intraoperative adjustments, increasing OR time, costs and patient risk. To improve patient‑specific planning and efficiency the hospital adopted 3D printing from Stratasys, deploying Stratasys PolyJet™ technology (including the Stratasys Objet Eden 350) to produce life‑like anatomical models and cutting guides.

Using Stratasys 3D printers and materials such as VeroWhite and sterilizable MED610™, the hospital brought model and guide production in‑house; Stratasys’ solution cut surgical planning time by 93%, saved three to four hours in the OR per facial/jaw reconstruction (equivalent to up to £20,000 per surgery at a quoted £5,000/hour), and extended benefits across burns, plastics, ENT and neurosurgery—improving precision, reducing costs and speeding procedures.
